Video Encoding from BCD
BCD guarantees quality MPEG encoding with fast turnaround and reasonable rates. Our files are real-time encoded for high quality and fast turnaround. BCD continues to offer a wide range of products and services to make multimedia not just powerful, but easy to use.

CD-Rom image "Fast Service, Excellent Quality, Reasonable Rates. " Our customers say that all the time, and we never get tired of hearing it. Thanks, friends! "Why is BCD's encoding service so reasonable when some places charge higher per minute charges with high minimums and setup charges?"
It's an easy answer. We encode video to MPEG on a daily basis for multimedia producers, ad agencies doctors, lawyers, and even people who want archival copies of their home videos. Our real-time encoding systems let us work efficiently and maintain excellent quality. We're MPEG Evangelists, so we offer a full range of ready-to-go MPEG encoding and Authoring systems for sale, too. Call for details.

MPEG full motion video is the "top of the line" for multimedia presentations. Full motion, full screen, full color! Show your video on the computer or TV monitor. You can have smooth un-jerky playback on a slow computer when you use an MPEG playback card. Fast (133MHz Pentium®) computers can use software to playback MPEG-1 and sometimes MPEG-2.)

Choose either 'per file' or 'per minute' rate per order.

  • Large MPEG-2 files can be delivered on DLT at extra charge.
  • MPEG-2 files are provided as MP2(multiplexed), or elementary M2V with your choice of MPA(MPEG-1 Layer2 audio), PCM 48KHz, or 2-channel Dolby Digital AC-3® (If files are for DVD, we suggest Dolby AC-3 for smaller file size and greater compatibility than MPA.)
  • MPEG-2 files are encoded at your choice of CBR (Constant Bit Rate) or VBR (Variable Bit Rate). (Please specify CBR bitrate or VBR maximum bitrate. Our amazing Zapex encoder will take care of the rest!)

MPEG Details
Per-file rates are real!    Really!
CD is included. Maximum time per CD is a factor of Bit Rate, Typically, about 65 minutes for MPEG-1 at 1.5Mb/s and about 20 minutes for MPEG-2 at 3Mb/sec.
Per-minute rates have additional charges:
This is for projects needing several of short files. The charges for Per Scene and Per Disc are for the hassle of searching/cueing the video for each scene and CD-ROM/DVD-R disc creation. 10-minute minimum charge.

Additional MPEG encoding information

We offer per file as well as per minute rates for service. Both provide the same quality of encoding with your choice of Bit Rates. (Typical sampling rate for multimedia, CD-i and VideoCD is 1.15Mb/sec. MPEG-2 can be from 3Mb/sec to 10Mb/sec.) The price differences between per-scene and per-minute are due to our labor costs: it takes our technicians more time to set up a lot of short scenes than one big one. Choose the price schedule most appropriate for your project. Simple, easy pricing! Pick the plan according to your project.

Explanations
(For more detail, see additional MPEG encoding information.)
Per Scene: This is the best value for long sessions, since our biggest costs are in labor for setup time. Straight run. You must provide time code log and visual descriptions of In/Out points. Includes CD-ROM.
Per Minute: . Straight run. You must provide time code log and visual descriptions of In/Out points. Includes CD-ROM.

Example 1 - Per File: You send a BetaSP tape with time code containing 5 30-second spots. You want the entire tape put into one file. Use the Per File rate.
Example 2 - Per Minute: You send a BetaSP tape with time code containing 5 30-second spots. You want the each spot encoded to a separate file. Use the Per Minute rate. Add $10.00 per spot(Scene Charge) and add $10.00 for the final disc.
Example 3 - Per File, No Time Code: You send a VHS tape of your wedding video to put into one file. Use the Per File and add $25.00 as Surcharge for No Time. We will encode from the start of video to the end of video (or to the capacity of the CD).
Example 4: Per Minute, No Time Code You send a VHS tape of your wedding video. You want us to NOT encode the part where Uncle John spilled the punch bowl. You have provided, to the best of your ability, counter numbers from your VCR (HH:MM:SS Hours:Minutes:Seconds) AND you have provided a description of the video and audio at the IN and OUT points of that scene. Use the Per Minute rate. There are two scenes(before and after the Uncle John) so add $10.00 for each of the two scenes (Scene Charge) and add $25.00 per scene for each of the two scenes (Surcharge for No Time Code). Add
Example 4 No Time Code, Vague Description: You send a VHS tape of your wedding video to put into one file. You want us to NOT encode the part where Uncle John spilled the punch bowl. Your instructions are " Do not show Uncle John". Call us and we'll talk about it.

  • We reserve the right to charge extra for rush jobs and unforseen difficulties. It depends on your tape. Please call for details if your tapes do not have time code. If there are difficulties, we will call you first.
  • Additional copies of the same CD-ROM made at the same time: 1-5 @ $10.00, 6-10 @ $8.00. Ask about multiple copy prices. Prices for DVD-R upon request.
  • Payment may be by Visa, Mastercard, Company Check in Advance, or bank-bank wire transfer. BCD extends credit terms to those approved by our credit department. Call for a faxed credit application. Contract rates available.
Encoding Systems
Currently we perform real-time encoding with our OptiBase MPEG-5000 for MPEG-1 and a Zapex ZP-300 for MPEG-2 along with a variety of recording and premastering tools.
Tape Formats
Tapes may be Betacam SP, DV, S-VHS, VHS, 8mm, Hi8 or 3/4" U-Matic. We can also encode from PAL VHS and PAL S-VHS. We do not have time code capability for 8mm/Hi8 or 3/4" formats so please provide tape counter information (00:00:00:00 at tape head) and visual scene descriptions. Laser disc, CD-i and VideoCD are accepted formats if you can prove copyright ownership.

CD-ROM Format
Files are returned on CD-ROM in ISO-9660 format. DVD-R UDF format on request.

Encoding Parameters
You may specify the encoding rate. For MPEG-1: 85Mb/sec to 3.8Mb/sec (megabits per second, combined video+audio). (1.15Mb/s is typical for multimedia, CD-i and VideoCD) Also specify if the file is to be used for CD-i, Video-CD or straight .MPG. Separate MPA+MPV files are available on request at no extra charge. For MPEG-2 we offer 3Mb/sec to 15Mb/sec.

Other Services and Charges
We can add your other files to the same CD-ROM. Our rate is $125.00/operator hour, billable in 1/4 hour (15 min.) increments. We can put your files on CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) or VideoCD for continuous auto-play or with menu/hotspot scene selection.

Turnaround Time
All orders are processed in the order in which they are received. You'll have to wait your turn unless you plan ahead and make an appointment for your job, but one day in-house is not uncommon for small run-of-schedule jobs.

Compatability Guarantee
We test your playback files on different MPEG decoders to be certain they'll play well for you!
