Thank you for your interest in BCD’s Disc Video services. There are three main reasons why disc is the best way to play video: Quality, Interactivity, and Convenience.
Quality: Our least expensive format, MPEG-1, has better picture resolution than VHS tape. It’s nearly as good as S-Video. Our best format, DVD, is equivalent to broadcast-quality BetaCamSP.
Interactivity: With a little planning on your part, we can make it easy for your viewers to go to the specific scene they want to see without the frustrating Fast-Forward/Play/Oops procedure of video tape.
Convenience: It would probably be safe to say that there are more computers with CD-ROM drives and speakers in your office than there are VHS machines. The video files can even be played from your network server, network administration permitting.
BCD offers three main categories of services to put your video on a disc, presented in order of complexity and expense:
- MPEG on CD-ROM : (Laptop Video) for computer playback
- VideoCD : for playback on many DVD players and computers
- DVD-Video : The ultimate in quality video reproduction
Each disc type can be Linear or Interactive. Linear
discs are like video tape. You put the disc into the player and it plays
from beginning to end. You can pause and scan, but you cannot jump from
scene to scene. Interactive discs can have menus to permit selecting
which sections you want to play, depending on the type of disc. Sometimes
you'll need only one copy of a disc, or you may need 10 or 10,000. We offer a
complete range of duplication and replication services.
Here is a synopsis of our services and prices. Please note that every project is different and each of our client’s requirements is unique. These prices are general guidelines. There may be more than one way to calculate a price for a project. Please ask for a quotation for your specific project!
DVD-Video
To date, DVD provides the highest quality video reproduction available, equivalent to the professional BetaSP tape format, about three times as good as VHS tape. Linear DVD is perfect for archiving film and tape libraries and any application that requires high quality video playback, but does not require interactivity. We use the Zapex ZP-300CA for encoding, with CBR/CBR encoding and Dolby® AC-3 audio at no extra charge. For highest quality, we prefer that you submit your tapes as BetaSP, but we can accept MiniDV, 3/4", Hi8, SVHS and VHS.
BCD has prices linear DVDs, depending on the length of the program. Auto-repeat is optional at no extra charge.

This is the best there is! For corporate marketing videos you can present your standard program providing an overview of the company. Then, menu selections let the viewer choose his/her particular area of special interest.
Each DVD production is different, so it is difficult to create a one price fits all schedule. A good rule of thumb is about $ 20.00 per tape minute plus $ 200.00 per menu item, not including artwork and special features.

One popular special feature is the use of up to 8 different sound tracks for multiple languages or different audiences. Use one track for clients and another for employees. One check disc is included for your approval. BCD also offers Touch Screen control of DVD playback. This is an excellent application for trade shows and in-store displays.
You may provide your own graphics for the menus or you may use BCD’s contract artists. We encourage your participation in the development of the disc to be certain that you get what you want. Additional check discs are $ 100.00 each.
MPEG-1 Video on CD-ROM
Linear MPEG-1
This playback format
is extremely popular for distribution of corporate video productions.
People often copy the file to their laptop computers for convenient
playback, hence the term Laptop Video. Simply, we encode your
video into digital MPEG-1 video and put it on a CD for you or your customers
to play on their computer. We include a special autorun program
which plays the video automatically as soon as the CD is inserted.
Interactive MPEG-1
BCD can include Web pages on the CD. This plays your video
within the web page and permits links from page to page. This method
can also connect to your wb site on the Internet for the latest updates
of your information. Includes BCD's autorun which automatically
invokes your client's default web browser (Netscape or MS Internet Explorer).
VideoCD
VideoCD is widely used for motion picture playback in Asia, but is
not well known in the United States. VideoCD is a special CD-ROM format
that lets CD-ROMS play in many DVD players. Approximately 80% of DVD
players can play VideoCD, and they usually say so on the machine. VideoCD
is an excellent replacement for endless-loop videos often used for in-store
displays and trade shows.
(One versatile player is the Philips/Magnavox
DVD-825AT we found at Circuit City for $229.00. It plays every type
of VideoCD and DVD disc we produce. We think it's the consumer version of the Industrial DVD-170 which we sell for museum and touch-DVD projects.)
BCD prices linear auto-play VideoCDs, depending on the length of the program.
Auto-repeat is optional, with an extra charge.
Interactive VideoCD
VideoCD may also be somewhat interactive. A menu is presented when the VideoCD begins and the user may select various video segments by number using the player’s remote control.
Interactive Web-VideoCD
This method combines Interactive MPEG on CD-ROM with Interactive VideoCD. It lets the CD play in a computer as well as a DVD player!
Duplication and Replication
This is a good time for definitions. Duplication refers to copies made one at a time on CD recorders on CD-Recordable (CD-R) discs. Often we use several recorders to make several copies at once. Duplicated discs can be color printed with your logo or other artwork. Replicated discs come from a factory and are made by injection molding and pressing (just like mass-produced audio CDs).
MPEG & VideoCD Duplicates and Replicates
CD-ROM duplicates start at $25.00 for single copies. The price goes down sharply as the quantity goes up. See our special Short-Run CD Duplication Pricing section. 1000 replicated CDs will cost about $ 1.00 each. Typically this does not include the cost of packaging. Packaging and printing are the biggest cost variants. We offer jewel cases, cardboard mailers, paper envelopes (with and without windows) as well as printed inserts. Please ask for a price quotation on the quantity you anticipate.
DVD Duplicates and Replicates
BCD includes one check disc of each job for your approval. Additional check discs are $100.00 each when ordered at time of DVD production. For replication, a DLT Master Tape is required to send to the replicator. The charge for DLT is $ 150.00. Replicated DVDs cost about $ 3.00 each for 1000 discs printed, but not including packaging. As with CDs, the cost per disc goes down sharply as the quantities increase.
All prices are subject to change without notice, not just from us, but by our suppliers, too. We don’t mean to be too redundant, but
Please ask for a quotation on your specific project.
We believe that disc is the best way to play video.
