  • Aim a laser pointer at a photocell to trigger your DVD. 10 photocells = 10 buttons = 10 DVD Menu Items.
  • Use a Motion Detector to trigger the DVD
  • Use a Magnetic Reed Switch (like on doors and windows of a security systm). An object with a magnet will trigger the DVD.
  • Touch Screens. We sell them, too. Great for using different DVDs and presentations with several different menus.

DVD-C7 7-Button / RS-232 DVD Player
G853_C_w300.jpg(Click here for information on the BCD DVD-1150 Industrial DVD Recorder with Full RS-232 Control & Status)

DISCONTINUED:  The DVD-C7 Player has been Discontinued.
Please use the BCD VC-16b for Pushbutton DVD Control.

The BCD DVD-C7 is a DVD player designed especially for interactive displays and exhibits in museums, trade shows, or the corporate lobby. It has a built-in button controller and RS-232 control! Just connect your buttons and you're ready to go. (See also RS-232 DVD Recorders)
BCD DVD-C7 Player MSRP: $ 595.00

  • Pushbutton interface for up to 7 Buttons
  • RS-232 Port for control & programming

The DVD-C7 is preprogrammed with the Arrows (Up, Down, Left, Right), Enter, Next, and Previous, but you can assign any command to any button. OR, control multiple players from a single RS232 serial port!

The built-in RS-232 (rs232) DVD control port provides PC operation of one or more units in an interactive exhibit or display. It is also the interface for reprogramming to add firmware features. The RS-232 protocol expands on the BCD's 4-character command set in use since 1982. For example, "PLAY makes it play. (CR is a carriage return/linefeed). The DVD-C7 command set includes most of the commands found on the unit's handheld IR (infrared) remote control.

The 8-pin "button control port" provides closed contacts to let simple buttons / pushbuttons act as a wired remote for stand-alone operation without a computer.

Pinout diagrams of the 8-Pin "Button Connector" and the RS-232 connector are found in the Manual.

Control Connections (Current models use a DB-9F connector for button connections. We'll update the photo as soon as we can.)

  • The LED indicates operation and status codes.

  • Using the 8-pin Din connector harness (provided), the BCD DVD-C7 can accept up to 7 closed-contact pushbuttons. Preprogrammed commands are Up, Down, Left, Right, Enter, Previous, and Next, but any command may be assigned to any button.

  • The RS-232 port is 3-wire (TxD, RxD, GND) and uses a 1/8" stereo plug.

The DVD Player:
We enhance existing DVD players by installing our controller. The DVD players we select must meet certain criteria:
  • It must make good pictures! The current decks have
    • Component Video Out as well as "S" and Composite
    • Progressive Scan
    • Digital Audio Out
  • Play DVD "A", "-R" and "+R" discs. (The current player does not claim to play "+R" discs, but it really does!)
  • Play VideoCD (VCD) discs recorded on CD-R or CD-RW.
(Have you considered using a menued VCD as an Audio Only source in an exhibit?)
  • Autostart when Power is plugged in. (If the raw deck doesn't do this, our controller detects the power condition and turns it on!)

Since 1980 we have had excellent relationships with Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Pioneer, and now have become acquainted with the US managers of Apex and Go Video. (Oddly enough, all of these are made in Asia, and many of the brands may share the same core components.)

Warranty: For the DVD-C7 Player, BCD offers a better warranty than the DVD Player manufacturer: 1 year parts & labor. (BCD Controllers are always warranted for one-year, parts and labor.). BCD also offers extended parts/labor warranties at a modest cost. Not covered by warranty: machines that, in BCD's opinion, have been abused. Excluded damages include, but are not limited to, machines used to play discs with paper labels. (Paper labels unbalance the disc and cause undue wear on the disc spindle motor.) If you must use paper labels, we suggest you choose our VC-16b Controller and a separate DVD player. (Easy to replace the player.)

What it doesn't have:
It has a lot for a consumer player with industrial features, but it doesn't do everything:

  • Feedback! The BCD-C7 controller reliably sends commands to the deck, but our aftermarket installation does not permit the C7 controller to return meaningful information from the deck via RS-232 to your computer.
  • Touchscreen Interface (use Pioneer)
  • Goto Frame # (use Pioneer DVD-8000)
  • Return Frame # to PC via RS-232 (use Pioneer)

Important Notice:
The BCD DVD-C7 is a consumer machine with a BCD-C7 RS-232/Pushbutton controller installed. It works very, very well in light to medium duty installations. There is an issue, however, with the DVD drive mechanisms installed in consumer machines.... they fail after 12 - 24 months. So, if you anticipate using this system 24/7 or even 8/7, we advise you to consider the BCD VC-16b external controller.  That way, when the DVD machine breaks, you just get anothe DVD player at Walmart, Circuit City, or wherever.  Otherwise, you must send your DVD-C7 machine back to BCD for replacement.

What it does have is access to all the functions found on the remote, accessible with ordinary closed-contact pushbuttons or RS-232... and multiple machine control!

Model Order Info & Pricing:
BCD DVD-C7-P-S29
MSRP: $ 595.00
2-Year Extended Warranty: $49.95
Covers all problems except physical damage and use of paper labels.

Notice! Do not use paper labels on your DVDs!
BCD will not honor any warranties, guarantees, or service agreements if discs with paper labels have been used. It is generally agreed within the professional DVD community that DVD discs with paper labels should not be used for prolonged periods because they add weight and make the disc out of balanced. Over time, this wrecks the spindle bearings. If you must use paper labels, we suggest you choose our VC-16b Controller and a separate DVD player. (Easy to replace the player.)
